2005 Church Road Reserve Cabernet Merlot. Another one of the sensational Church Road Reserve wines which are putting down a strong premium value for money challenge to the boutique producers that have been in vogue for so long. Dense purple black in the glass, the nose on this wine is reserved and deep with brooding black fruits, chocolate and a smoky savoury tinge. The palate is compact and textured with fine silt like tannins. Soft textured chocolate mocha undertones lift a core of dark plum/ blackberry fruit. Still shy it needs time in the glass or preferably the bottle to open up. The ripeness level of this wine is benchmark. It isn’t over done. It keeps its freshness without any under ripe characters at all. The fruit shows depth, concentration and density. A wine that can only improve further. Cellar a handful of these. Value for money at a tad over $30 and reward in waiting. 96++/109
