2008 Dry River Lovat Gewurztraminer
For those of us not exclusive enough to be on the Dry River mailing list, there exists a single rule – if you see it, buy it! Passing through Martinborough I stumbled across the latest release and eagerly snapped up a couple of bottles. I was travelling with some friends who are solid Johanneshof Gewurz fans and I couldn’t resist opening a bottle for us to ponder over in the evening. The verdict? Fabulous!
You can’t miss the nose on this wine. From the second the cork was pulled it started to waft around the room. Classic sweet & floral nose – a touch of rose petal & lemon peel but jasmine notes wafted above the others. Very pale gold straw in colour & a slick consistency that looked as if the wine had been slightly reduced. There is a serious silkyness about this wine – it is lush and thick without being syrupy even though it’s appearance may suggest otherwise. Turkish delight is not the predominant characteristic, rose water is detected but only at a secondary level. Peaches, cloves and vanilla pack this wine but they are cut through by a light acidity and fresh mineral (quartz) finish. Everything is completely balanced & though some might discourage you from drinking this wine young, it is delicious now! Every sip kept me interested and by savouring each one my glasses seemed to last me ages. This is not one to guzzle but sit and enjoy slowly with company. This is the perfect aperitif – no accompaniement required. Enjoy often! 100+/109
