2002 Te Mata Elston Chardonnay. This is arguably Hawkes Bay’s greatest white wine label. Still a youthful colour which is only just is starting to gain some colour. The nose announces lemons, grapefruit, pineapple, raw sugar with just the faintest touch of caramel. The palate is elegant and refined saturated with flavours of bottled lemon, fresh grapefruit with a touch of pith and lemon meringue. The immense concentration is very noticeable, just gorgeous. The whole frame is finely boned, very focussed, young and elegant. A feature of this wine is the monster long lingering finish which seemingly never ends. Really it is a drink in fantastic shape. It seemed a lot younger than the vintage indicates and it wasn’t even in particularly fantastic storage conditions. A pristine example, a benchmark, a classic. A wine of precision. 98/109
