2007 Church Road Reserve Syrah. This is a wine I have really wanted to try but the opportunity just hasn’t presented itself until now. Of course it has plenty of reputation in its short two vintage history. The 2007 version has already picked up a trophy at the Air NZ wine show. I can only underline current opinion. This is a phenomenal wine, even without considering its comparatively modest price tag. Exceptionally deep coloured in the glass the nose is subdued and restrained but deep set and classy with aromas of Doris plum and Belgium chocolate. The palate is just a sensation. It drips class. The restraint and fineness is astonishing. Everything is in proportion and balance, everything just a tad understated all adding up to a gorgeous sophisticated wine. The fruit is very much to the fore, the oak handling so careful. It isn’t a spicy Syrah, no peppery influence. The fruit is dark and silky with dark plum and blackberry fruit. Extremely classy wine and really this is a must buy. $35 99/109
