1994 Goldwater Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot. This is an astounding wine from the pioneers of Waiheke wine. The 1994 remains I feel their most famous vintage. Definitely it is their longest lived. At fifteen years old the youth displayed in the glass is simply amazing. It is a dark youthful purple colour in the glass. It honestly looks hardly a day old. On the nose we are accosted by pure varietal aromas of blackcurrant, cassis and mint. The palate is firmly structured with fine bracing tannins and waves of dark clean and pure blackcurrant like fruit. It is almost too young still and cries out for a lump of cheddar, or in our case Moroccan Roast Lamb. It is a very classical and perfectly ripe wine with freshness, definition and weight. A great Waiheke wine from a stellar Waiheke vintage. Very, very impressive. Well stored this wine should canter for another ten or more years. It appears to be as close as a New Zealand red wine gets to immortal. 99+/109
