2007 Esk Valley Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon Malbec. Another pointer to the quality of the 2007 Hawkes Bay reds. Looking back through the dusty memory banks I really feel this is the best vintage of this label I have tried. I word that seems to pop up when tasting the 2007 reds is “plush”. This too is a plush wine. Vibrant purple in the glass. The nose is gentle and fruit driven with deep plum fruit to the fore. It is very fragrant. The palate is soft and silky, plush and plump. Definition is given by fine dusty tannins. A layered and creamy texture gives depth to the deep plum, blackberry confection, spice and cream in the mouth. It is an extremely classy wine. On special at $15 this is a real buy. Based on this the 2007 Reserve when it is released is probably a “must buy” vintage! 94/109
