2007 Villa Maria Cellar Selection Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine continues the trend of highlighting the quality of the 2007 vintage in the Hawkes Bay for red wine. Past vintages of this wine have been rather extracted and bolshie, offering plenty of obvious flavours and no shortage of power. The 2007 vintage manages some style and elegance while still maintaining the fruit driven concentration, depth and substance that Villa Maria reds are known for. The nose offers aromas of deep blackberry, violet like florals, cedar and deep rose like perfume. The open palate is juicy and forward with plenty of power as it enters the mouth, fading nicely into an elegant and long finish with dusty residual tannins noticeable. Flavours of deep Doris plum predominate. It is unashamedly new world in style; plump and plush. It is a stylish red really and a must buy for those Friday drinks after a long week at work. I picked it up for $15 on special at the supermarket. Stunning value 94/109
