2004 Cloudy Bay Pelorus. We tasted this as part of a three way blind tasting with NV Lindauer Blanc de Blancs and NV Taittinger. I was going to write the whole event up but very busy and tired lately so you get a shortened version. Suffice to say the quality of the Pelorus fooled me into thinking it was the Taittinger. Next to what was the real Taittinger it showed better aromatics. It was light and fluffy on the palate, detailed and refined with a finely boned structure. The palate was pleasantly ripe and seemed more approachable than the taut and tensioned Taittinger. To start with it showed a bit of reductive bitterness on the finish but this seemed to fade as it sat in the glass and whether blind or with the identities revealed the conclusion was the same. The Pelorus won the day for me and drew 4-4 with Taittanger as a group score. Take into account it is half the price of the Champagne and it’s a winner. The best NZ fizz we have tried year to date. Very much recommended. 96/109
