 1998 Brookfields Gold Label Cabernet Merlot. This is classic 1998 Hawkes Bay. The nose is astonishing with a variety of sweet spice notes among cassis, liquorice and blackberry. The palate is restrained but at the same time generous and voluptuous with floods of quite primary fruit. Again, as with most 1998’s it doesn’t show the focus and precision of other vintages, but what it loses here it more than makes up in its generosity and warmth. One of the better wines from this freakish and watershed Hawkes Bay vintages. 97/109
