2005 Te Mata Coleraine. This on release looked a great vintage of Coleraine. It still looks excellent, though it doesn’t display the same density as the latest 2007 vintage (which of course is Cabernet predominant). Tasted alongside some heavyweight Bordeaux blends, the 2005 is ruby red in the glass, the nose displays redcurrant, liquorice and pencil lead and leather. The palate is intellectual and serious framed by lovely silky tannins, liquorice laced red fruit and a seamless feel. Although this was reasonable approachable on release, it is now in many ways quite tight and locked up. It still has time to reach its peak, it should look great in 5 years time. I really like this wine a lot and happy to have a few tucked away! 99/100
