2008 Te Mata Awatea. 2008 is a vintage we have a few questions over, though if you tried this wine in isolation you would wonder what the worry is about. It is a deep purple in the glass. The nose displays chalky blackberry notes. The palate introduces lovely ripe, clean and fresh black fruits. There is some plumpness and generosity here, but and underlying very linear wine held together with dusty/ chalky tannins. Lovely concentration and poise. This is an Awatea to drink before the closed, more monolithic 2007 vintage. It is approachable now and should give pleasure over the next five years or more. 95/109
